The Denmark National Speedway team was a force to be reckoned with in the 1980s, they won six straight world titles consecutively from 1983 to 1988. They still are one of the top teams in the world. The top riders in the team, who were acclaimed title winners, are Hans Nielsen, he is known for holding the record for the highest individual victories by a single rider. He has a record 11 wins to his name. Tommy Knudsen has 8 wins to his credit. Erik Gundersen has 7 victories. Jan O Pedersen has won 4 titles; Finn Thomsen and Ole Olsen each have 3 wins to their credit. Denmark has two more National Speedway Teams under different age groups-
The Denmark national speedway under-21 team is under the authority of the Danish Motor Union (DMU). The team began with the World Cup Under-21 in all categories and returned home winning five medals. They won: 1 gold in 2010, 2 silver each in 2008 and 2009, and 2 bronze each in 2005 and 2006. So an upward trend is seen where the team’s performance is concerned. The three Under-21 Danish World Champions are (1989) Gert Handberg, (1991) Brian Andersen and (1997) Jesper B. Jensen. Finn Rune and Alf Busk in 1977 and 1978 won the Under-21 Individual European Championship. The same was later won by Tommy Knudsen in 1980. The Denmark national speedway Under-19 team like all national speedway teams is controlled by the DMU. The team started competing in the European Under-19 Speedway Championships in all categories. They won two bronze medals in 2008 and 2009. Denmark has had two European Under-19 champions and they are (2003) Kenneth Bjerre and (2007) Nicolai Klindt. |
