There are two more numbers which are 17 and 18, these are the reserve riders. In 2010, the riders numbered from 1 to 8 finished in the same order as they had been numbered and so they automatically booked a place for themselves in the competition of 2011. Four more riders were added to the list of those who were nominated by the SGP commission and also by the Speedway FIM Grand Prix. Three riders qualified from the Danish Grand Final. This is how the 15 rider are selected as regulars. The 16 riders have their starting positions already predetermined by a ballot done at the FIM, which takes place at the SGP pits around 1:00pm before the practice session on Friday. In the Danish Speedway Grand Prix, each meeting has 23 heats. Each heat is run with a maximum 4 riders running just 4 laps around the oval circuit. The Grand Prix points are given accordingly as per the total points scored in the whole race even. To give an example, consider the 2011 Grand Prix race format. There were 16 riders and 20 heats in the main event making sure that each rider has ridden with every other rider. The top eight then moved into the two semifinals and the first as well as second position from these semifinals moved into the finals. The point scoring system for the main event and semifinals are as follow: 1st position (3pts), 2nd position (2pts), 3rd position (1pt) and 4th position (0pts).The scoring system for the finals, which is Heat number 23 is as follow: 1st position (6pts), 2nd position (4pts), 3rd position (2pts) and 4th position (0pts). The safety rules of these races require the rider to wear riding boots, certified helmets and protective leatherwear of at least 1.2mm in thickness to meet the FIM requirements. For identification to the referee the riders need to wear the color of their gate on the helmets, by wearing a colored helmet cover. |
