Former champion, Ole Olsen who was three times world champion, helped make Motorcycle speedway a popular motorsport in Denmark.Since, his retirement Olsen is now a race director for the FIM Speedway Grand Prix.

The three leagues for Speedway racing in Denmark are -

  • The Danish League, also known as Dansk Speedway Liga
  • Division 1
  • Division 2

The climatic conditions for Speedway race meeting are suitable only from April to September and so they meet during this time. There are six teams in the Danish League which traditionally meet every Wednesday evening. As each season comes to an end the best of the four teams compete with each other at the semi-final and final’s playoffs. The winner of these playoffs is declared the league champion. The Danish League takes in members purely on application; there is no relegation or promotion. The end of the Speedway season is marked by the Danish Super Cup, where the best of five team of the Danish League compete with each other is in a single event, hosted by the team that won the previous season.

Division 1 and Division 2 speedway racing are mostly for amateur riders at the levels of second tier and third tier. These meeting are held during the mid summer break on every Saturday. The selection procedure goes by the Division 1 having a maximum strength of eight teams and the remaining teams are added to Division 2. The meetings are staged two at a time with four teams in each format. The two racing divisions work under the principle that, the bottom rung team of Division 1 is replaced and relegated with the top team of Division 2, which is done as long as the parent club has no other team in Division 1. However, this may not always happen due to financial reasons. If the team at the bottom of Division 1 and the team at the top of Division 2 are at from the same club, then there is no relegation or promotion.
