Motorcycle speedway was originated in 1923 in Maitland, Australia. Motorcycle speedway in Denmark refers to a motorcycle race that occurs on an oval track, which has loose mud on it. The race occurs for more than 4 anticlockwise laps. As the motorcycles are not allowed to have any brakes the rider uses the surface for powersliding and broadsliding along the bends. Along straight ways the motorcycles can reach speeds up to 70 miles/hr.
Speedway motorcycles are unique and their specifications are governed by the Track Racing Technical FIM Rules. In the old bikes the engines were mostly upright but today speedway motor cycles have laydown engine as the riders find these easier to handle. The bikes have a single gear and no brakes. The clutch is used once only at the beginning of the race. The gear ratio may be adjusted for track conditions by using the rear wheel sprockets and engine. Using methanol as a fuel helps increase the compression ratio, thus producing more power and the motorcycle can thus reach speeds of 81miles/hr. The required specifications of the bike are as mentioned below.
- The dry weight of the bike should be not less than 77Kg.
- There should be a carburetion fed single cylinder four-stroke engine of capacity not more than 500cc, with only a single spark plug.
- It should have guards fitted on moving engine parts where ever reasonably possible.
- It should have an additional chain guard to avoid the fingers getting nipped where the chain and sprocket meet.
- Must be fitted with a Dutch Peg to prevent accidents caused by broken primary chain during the race.
- Shatter resistant plastic should be used where necessary.
- A dirt deflector should be fitted for the rear wheel.
- The fuel used should be methanol without any additives.
- The bike should be fitted with a FIM approved silencer and the width of the handle bar should be no more than 85cm and not less than 65cm.
- No construction of the motorcycle should be made from titanium.
- Parts should be ceramic coated where possible.
- Telemetry devices cannot be used to measure race timing.
- No brakes allowed.
- Engine should not be electronically assisted or be supercharged or turbocharged in any way.
