Historiske standard- og GT-vogneHistoriske standard- og GT-vogne, is a class of racing that deals with racing of historic standard and GT cars. This motor sport was introduced in the early nineties and has grown and gained popularity in Denmark. Previously the classic cars came on race circuits only as guest appearances in mixed fields. The interest now has grown greatly in running races with classic cars and with the number of these entries increasing every year, the DMU has been able to harmonize the race classes without much difficulty.

In the GT class, cars like Michael Ford Lotus Escort are raced on Danish tracks like Ring Djursland, Padborg Park and Jyllands-Ringen. The oldest of cars are assembled and built in groups going right up the year 1965. At these races, one can see the old GT cars like the Lotus Elan living up to their racing glory. In the standard racing class, you will find the likes of Ford Cortina and Macot Mini Cooper. One of the Ford Cortina models is owned by the Royal Highness of Denmark, Prince Joachim.

The largest groups of racers among the historical GT and Standard cars are from the period between 1966 and 1971. This category of racers is rather large as this was the time of development in the Danish economy and the simultaneous growth in the automobile industry. The models we are referring to are Ford Escort, Mustang, BMW 2002, Porsche 911, Alfa Romeo GTV and Morris Cooper.

Besides the historical standard and GT cars, we also have a special field of racing known as the Classic Race Aarhus. These cars have taken part in classic events like the 24-hour races at Daytona or Le Mans or the famous Canam Series Championships.

Some of the cars used in these events have Danish history behind it. The Spice-Cosworth SE89C from the Group C-class driven by Claus Bjerglund was also earlier driven at the Le Mans in 1989 by Thorkild Thyrring. The car now has been overhauled and is not exactly the same car. Also driven here was Peter Iversen’s Porsche 906, which marked the turning point in the Porsche story, as it was from this model onwards that Porsche gained its long standing tradition at Le Mans.
